Running in the Grand Canyon and the South Rim Trail

Previously serving as a division supervisor for Rapid Response Monitoring, Kitty Doupe also has extensive experience serving with the U.S. military and guiding training exercises for the U.S. Air Force through her current work in Las Vegas. An avid triathlon runner, Kitty Doupe visited the Grand Canyon this year and spent New Year's Day running the South Rim Trail.

The Grand Canyon offers numerous paved trails that are suitable for experienced runners, including the South Rim Trail. Almost 13 miles in length, the trail can become quite busy in the middle of the day, so one should consider running it early in the morning or bypassing this section entirely by taking the Greenway trails, which crisscross through pine forests and local communities.

Although it's less challenging than some of the trails in the canyon, the South Rim Trail remains challenging enough due to its altitude and varying weather conditions. Some other popular running trails along the South Rim include Bright Angel and the South Kaibab.

Those looking for a more substantial challenge can go beyond the South Rim with the Rim to Rim to Rim route. However, attempting this extended run requires a Special Use Permit from Grand Canyon National Park.

Community Theater Auditioning Tips

Kitty Doupe possesses almost two decades of military and medical emergency response experience. Before relocating to Las Vegas for work, Kitty Doupe lived in Upstate New York, where she was actively involved in her local community theater.

Community theaters often draw from the local talent pool when casting for a play or musical. While these auditions are less competitive, actors should be well prepared if they wish to secure a coveted role. Here are a few tips for standing out during auditions.

Go off-book - An actor who is off-book can recite his or her lines from memory. Demonstrating this level of familiarity with the play or musical can boost an actor’s credibility.

Show other skills - Community theaters often rely on volunteers to handle all aspects of production, including costume and set design. People who have artistic skills or experience in stage production can be appealing to producers.

Understand the content - The subject of a community theater production can be related to the history or current dynamics of the surrounding community. Actors who can demonstrate a deep understanding of the play’s themes and how it relates to the current state of the community will show their commitment to putting on a quality production.
